Senate committee confirms Dr. Barry Martin to Medical Services Board

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously to recommend the appointment of Dr. Barry Martin to the Medical Services Board and placed his nomination on the consent calendar.
Dr. Barry Martin, a primary care physician who said he has cared for people with disabilities “primarily for the last 35 years,” told the committee he previously served as medical director of a community health center system in the Denver metro area and has worked closely with Medicaid. He said that experience would help him evaluate proposed Medicaid rules for their effects on people who use Medicaid for insurance.
The Medical Services Board, which advises the Department of Health Care Policy and Finance on Medicaid rules, consists of 11 members and must include at least one member from each congressional district, the committee was told during the introduction.
Senator Weisman moved “the full Senate with a favorable recommendation” for Dr. Martin’s appointment. The committee took a roll-call voice vote and recorded unanimous support; the clerk read multiple aye votes before the chair noted the nomination passed. The committee then moved the confirmation to the consent calendar.
Dr. Martin spoke briefly and thanked the committee; no committee questions were raised during the hearing. The nomination will appear on the Senate consent calendar for consideration by the full chamber.
