Tamarac staff propose allowing text-only electronic message signs on major corridors

Community development director Kent Wallia told staff the city will present a proposed text amendment to the Land Development Code (section 10-4.0.1) that would allow electronic message signs (EMS) on specified corridors and nonresidential parcels.
Wallia said the request originally came from a church that sought an electronic message sign for events and announcements. He outlined staff’s proposed restrictions: EMS signs would be text only, with no strobes, no animations and no flashing; typical size limits would be 6 by 7 feet for nonresidential plazas under 65,000 square feet and up to 8 by 9 feet for plazas larger than 65,000 square feet.
"Right now, electronic message signs are prohibited, but we are looking to allow those on the specific corridors," Wallia said. Staff said they will provide illustrative examples in the commission presentation and will identify which corridors are eligible, including State Road 7, West Commercial Boulevard and North University Boulevard.
The amendment will be presented for first reading at the Jan. 29 commission meeting.
