Eagan staff brief SEAC on academy, Earth Day plans and Xcel partnership for electrification

City staff updated the Sustainable Eagan Advisory Commission on Feb. 10 about public outreach and partnerships tied to the city's climate action plan, including education programs, utility partnerships and fleet electrification planning.
"Our first Sustainable Eagan Academy was very successful," staff member Jillian said, reporting that the session had more than 50 attendees and that the next session is scheduled for Feb. 26. Jillian said the city will hold its Earth Day celebration on April 18 and planned to publish a month of related events and promotional materials.
On partnerships and planning, Jillian said the city has been accepted into Xcel Energy's partners and energy program and will begin a planning phase with the utility. She added that the city is "nearing the finalization of our alternative fuels fleet plan," which includes recommendations for light‑duty fleet electrification, and that the city will provide electrification education and technical assistance through the Electrify Everything Minnesota program in partnership with the Center for Energy and Environment.
When Commissioner Robichaud asked about the council's consideration of a working definition of "clean energy," Jillian said the definition was provided to the council and received no feedback, so staff will assume it was accepted and will add it to the city's sustainability webpage. "So again, thank you to the commission for working on the definition and, at this time there aren't any further updates," she said.
Jillian told commissioners the city is preparing a communications campaign to summarize the climate action plan and resources for residents and businesses, with planned distribution around Earth Month. The updates did not include specific budget figures or new council actions; staff said additional details on the alternative fuels plan and formal next steps will be provided as planning concludes.
