Orange Beach council to consider interim police chief; Lt. Trent Johnson nominated for Aug. 19 agenda

Michelle Lucas, Orange Beach’s human resources director, told the council on Aug. 5 that Police Chief Steve Brown will retire at the end of the month and that staff had met with the department’s sergeants and lieutenants to gather feedback on interim leadership.
"August 14 is the deadline for the August 19 meeting agenda," Lucas said, adding that if a name was not ready by then the council would need a special meeting on or before Aug. 31. Her presentation summarized the department’s internal feedback and set the timeline for placing an interim appointment on the next regular meeting agenda.
During discussion a council member nominated Lieutenant Trent Johnson as the council’s selection for interim chief. The nominating member asked Johnson to stand; council agreed to place the nomination on the Aug. 19 agenda for formal consideration.
No formal vote to appoint an interim chief was taken on Aug. 5. Lucas emphasized the timeline and next steps: staff will include the nomination and supporting materials on the Aug. 19 packet so the council can vote at that meeting, or convene a special meeting if necessary. The council did not discuss candidate qualifications in detail during the public session.
What's next: The council is scheduled to consider the interim appointment on Aug. 19. If the council lacks a finalized nomination by the Aug. 14 packet deadline, staff said a special meeting would be required before Aug. 31 to act ahead of Chief Brown’s retirement.
