County to provide law enforcement for Fremont; board approves adding one patrol officer

Waupaca County’s board voted May 21 to approve an intergovernmental agreement for the county sheriff to provide law enforcement services to the Village of Fremont, following the village’s March 25 vote to abolish its police department.
The resolution notes the Village Board on May 14 approved payment for services of roughly $109,000 per year; the amount will be prorated for the first year. The Sheriff’s Office determined it needs to add one Patrol Officer to provide the contracted services. The fiscal estimate states operating costs for the new position will be about $55,180 in 2024, and an additional vehicle purchase is expected in 2025 and every third year thereafter.
Supervisor Pete Bosquez moved and Supervisor Cindy Hardy seconded adoption of Resolution No. 4. The board adopted the resolution 22-0.
The resolution authorizes the Finance Director to amend the 2024 budget to fund the position. It states that, except for funding provided by the Village of Fremont, the county’s general fund unassigned balance will fund 2024 expenditures and future tax-levy-funded costs if not covered by the village. No additional amendments or dissent were recorded during the meeting.
