Hood River County approves creation of Technology Services Director to strengthen cybersecurity oversight

The Hood River County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 21 to create and hire a Technology Services Director, citing the need for strengthened cybersecurity oversight and cross-departmental coordination in information services.
County staff described the current Information Services operation as providing essential 24/7 services but lacking dedicated strategic oversight for cyber planning, software management and cross-department budgeting. Budget & Finance Director Sheri Patterson said personnel funds are available in the current budget category and staff recommended acting before the regular budget cycle because the need was judged urgent.
Commissioner Weathers, who moved for creation of the position, said that additional oversight could reduce siloing and duplication of software efforts. Commissioner Babitz emphasized the importance of protecting courthouse, tax and security records from data breaches; the Board directed the clerk to receive a confirmation email with the department's second quarterly report for record purposes.
The motion to create and hire the position carried unanimously; the county will proceed with classification, recruitment and hiring steps.
