Raeford council adopts resolution to consider closing part of South Bethel Road

The Raeford City Council on Oct. 7 adopted Resolution 2022-10, declaring the council’s intention to consider closing a portion of South Bethel Road between High School Street and College Drive. The resolution, adopted unanimously, sets a public hearing for 7 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2022, in the James B. McLeod Council Chambers at Raeford City Hall.
The resolution cites North Carolina General Statute 160A-299 as the council’s authority to close streets and describes the affected segment as beginning at its intersection with High School Street and continuing southerly for approximately 850 feet, an area of roughly one acre, as shown on a map labeled “Exhibit A,” which is available for inspection in the office of the City Clerk.
Under the terms of Resolution 2022-10, the City Clerk is directed to publish the Resolution of Intent once a week for four successive weeks in the News Journal or another newspaper of general circulation and to transmit a copy by registered or certified mail to each owner of property abutting the portion of South Bethel Road under consideration. The resolution also directs that adequate notices be posted as required by G.S. 160A-299.
Councilwoman Mary Neil King moved to adopt the resolution; Councilman Wayne Willis seconded. The motion was carried unanimously by the council members present. Mayor John K. McNeill, III presided. Councilman Charles Allen was absent from the Oct. 7 meeting.
The next step in the process is the public hearing on Nov. 7, where the council will hear comments and consider final action. Members of the public may inspect Exhibit A and related materials at the City Clerk’s office prior to that hearing.
