Board reviews a large policy packet and pauses May outreach while rethinking format

At the Camas School District Board workshop on April 8, board members conducted a detailed first-read review of a packet of policies and discussed options for community outreach and scheduling.
The policy discussion covered multiple items: updates to legal references in existing policies, a new conduct policy, student attendance language and changes in statutory phrasing from 'emergency expulsion' to 'emergency removal' following recent state law updates. Chair (speaker 1) cited a note on the legislative change: "It has to do with House Bill 1207," and staff explained that the change is largely semantic to avoid prejudicial language in records.
Board members asked staff to verify specific edits, including why certain WASDA-recommended clauses were struck in one draft and to clarify which leaves and paid/unpaid distinctions apply to different staff categories. On one policy that would allow unpaid days for observance of faith or conscience, members asked staff to explain how the new language compares with existing unpaid-leave processes and under what circumstances the district would grant those days.
On outreach, the board discussed whether the existing format for 'coffee talks' attracts a representative cross-section of the community. Members proposed alternatives — attending PTA meetings, having small site visits, or adding a table at a First Friday event — and asked staff to assemble a shared Google doc to collect ideas. The board tentatively agreed to pause the May 4 coffee talks and scheduled an all-day planning session for August 14 to replace a July date that lacked a quorum.
No policies were adopted at the workshop; staff promised to return with clarifications and recommended language for future meetings.
