Poweshiek County supervisors approve liquor licenses, hear economic development update

At its March 23 meeting the Poweshiek County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved routine business including two liquor licenses and heard a quarterly update from the Poweshiek Economic Development Collaborative that highlighted housing needs, a new downtown thrift store and plans for business training.
Poweshiek County Board of Supervisors members Jeff Tindle, Jacki Bolen and Jason Roudabush met in regular session March 23 and unanimously approved routine business including the agenda, minutes and two liquor licenses.
Supervisor Jeff Tindle moved to approve the agenda; Jacki Bolen seconded and the board voted 3-0. Bolen moved, with Tindle seconding, to approve the March 19, 2026 board minutes; that motion also passed 3-0. The board approved a liquor-license renewal for Gator Enterprise LLC on a motion by Tindle, seconded by Bolen, and approved a liquor license for TA Operating LLC, doing business as TravelCenters of America, on a motion by Bolen, seconded by Tindle; both motions carried with three ayes.
The board then received a quarterly update from Melissa Strovers of the Poweshiek Economic Development Collaborative. Strovers said she continues business retention and expansion (BRE) visits with businesses in Grinnell and noted the City of Grinnell has completed a housing study. She reported that Prairie Thrift, a new thrift store in Grinnell, is scheduled to open in April and that proceeds will be directed to downtown Grinnell projects.
Strovers summarized assessments from other county towns: Brooklyn identified downtown façade improvements, parking and streetscape work, and housing as priority areas; Malcom, following a walk-through with an Iowa Economic Development representative, identified a need for “fill‑in” housing on vacant lots and expressed interest in developing a new community center. She said she is coordinating training sessions for local business employees with Montezuma Community Development after business owners requested more training opportunities.
Strovers also announced the Poweshiek Economic Development Collaborative annual meeting for shareholders is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, at the Brooklyn Opera House.
Supervisors closed with brief calendar notes: Roudabush said he has an Iowa Workforce meeting the next day; Tindle listed DeCat, Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center finance committee and Emergency Management meetings; Bolen listed Healthy Choices, a community health needs assessment planning meeting and an Iowa Workforce committee meeting. On a motion by Tindle and second by Bolen the board adjourned at 10:18 a.m.
Poweshiek County Auditor Melissa Eilander signed the minutes.
