Nooksack Valley board approves temporary hires, a permanent hire and a teacher leave

Temporary hires approved (motion by Ty Elmendorf; second by Shelley Harder; motion carried 5-0) included Alma Rick, Paraeducator I at Nooksack Elementary (effective Nov. 19, 2024–Jan. 31, 2025); Jeffrey Erickson, third-grade teacher at Everson Elementary (effective Jan. 6–Mar. 31, 2025); Luis Garcia-Villegas, Spanish teacher at Nooksack Valley High School (effective Dec. 11, 2024–June 13, 2025); and Ivy Thompson, fifth-grade teacher at Sumas Elementary (effective Feb. 3–June 13, 2025).
The board also approved the hire of Briana McInnis as an Early Childhood Specialist at Everson Elementary (motion by Shelley Harder; second by Tanya Silves; motion carried 4-0).
Separately, the board approved a temporary leave for Stephanie Garza, ELA teacher at Nooksack Valley Middle School, effective Jan. 17–June 13, 2025 (motion by Tanya Silves; second by Ty Elmendorf; motion carried 4-0).
All actions were approved during the regular meeting and were recorded in the minutes with effective dates where provided. The approvals enable staffing continuity across district buildings for the remainder of the school year.
