Lake Stevens board hears proposed civility-in-the-workplace policy

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources John Balmer described Policy 4161 as aligned with the Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) model policy with Lake Stevens-specific additions, including a definition of uncivil conduct and an explicit expectation that staff "refrain from gossip." Balmer said the policy's purpose is to prevent hostility or personal attacks and to help staff focus on educating students.
Board members asked questions and thanked Balmer for the policy work; the policy was presented for discussion and no formal board vote was recorded during the meeting. Superintendent Dr. Mary Templeton and other board members expressed general appreciation for the district's focus on a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
