Lake Stevens: 15% of students have participated in Multilingual Learner program; 72 teachers GLAD-certified

At the Aug. 27 meeting Executive Director Sarah Danielson presented data on the district's Multilingual Learner (ML) program, saying 1,586 students—about 15% of current students—have taken part in the program at some point.
Danielson reported that roughly 20% of ML students also receive support through an individualized education plan (IEP) and that 13.5% of ML participants have qualified for Highly Capable (HiCap) services. She reviewed WIDA proficiency expectations, factors that influence growth, and the role of GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) professional learning in supporting English learners. Multilingual Specialists Kristen Odegaard and Cassandra Dark described GLAD training feedback; Danielson said 72 LSSD teachers have completed GLAD certification to date.
The board later approved the Transitional Bilingual Program (TBIP) program and related grants as part of consent or subsequent action items.
