Nooksack Valley board declares emergency to seek state, federal flood aid

The Nooksack Valley School Board unanimously approved Resolution 8 on Dec. 18 authorizing the district to declare a state of emergency and seek state and federal assistance to support recovery from recent flooding.
Superintendent and Board Secretary Matt Galley told the board the declaration is necessary to apply for both federal and state money that may be available to help repair facilities and support students and staff affected by the floods. The motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Director Tanya Silves and seconded by Shelly Harder; the board recorded the motion as passed, 5-0.
Galley also delivered a brief superintendent's report on facility, student and staff impacts from the flood; he told the board staff and families have been supported through rapid reopening efforts and volunteer assistance in the community. The board then approved payroll and vouchers as presented for multiple funds, with check ranges and totals recorded in the meeting minutes.
The declaration allows district administrators to pursue applications for emergency assistance; the board did not specify dollar amounts to be requested during the meeting. The district will follow applicable state and federal application processes to seek reimbursements or recovery grants.
