North Lake Middle and Mt. Pilchuck elementary outline instruction, assessment and family-engagement plans

North Lake Middle School Principal Brad Abels said the school's improvement focus is raising outcomes for underserved students through Tier One instructional strategies and collaborative educator teams. He reported English Language Arts performance with 86% of sixth-graders and 81% of seventh-graders performing at, near or above standard; among Learning Assistance Program (LAP) students, 74% of sixth-graders and 91% of seventh-graders were at similar levels. Associate Principal Kelly Goodmansen presented math interim assessment results showing 81% of sixth-graders and 75% of seventh-graders at, near or above standard; Math LAP subgroup results were 63% (6th) and 42% (7th).
Diana Etheridge outlined Tier One universal instructional practices including positive student greetings, co-created classroom norms, structured vocabulary routines, "Teachers Talk 10/Students Reflect 2" and "Prove It/Cite Your Source," plus small-group instruction and growth monitoring. Goodmansen said the school's social-emotional learning goals emphasize improving attendance and behavior as part of boosting academic outcomes.
Mt. Pilchuck Elementary Principal Malissa Weatherbie described efforts to align school systems, strengthen grade-level data review, and expand small-group instruction. She said the school will partner with Solution Tree to implement Professional Learning Communities to deepen data-informed practices. Associate Principal Bethany Anderson added the school is creating in-person family events and aligned communication to support student assessment preparation, including Smarter Balanced Assessments and spring i-Ready diagnostics.
District leaders framed these efforts as part of multi-year improvement planning rather than single-year fixes; no new policy or funding decisions were made at the meeting.
