Parent raises allegations of racially abusive language; board pledges review and action

Ty Simmons told the Nooksack Valley School Board of Directors during public comment that students of color at district schools have been targeted with racially abusive language and behavior and urged the board to strengthen protections, including writing explicit language into the district mission statement and the athletic code of conduct.
Chairman Steve Jones said he had been unaware of the extent of the problem and pledged to “more fully understand the scope” as the board follows up. Several board members, including Tanya Silves, Ty Elmendorf and Halli Kimball, publicly thanked the Simmons family for speaking and said the board would work to improve students’ experiences and hold individuals accountable.
Superintendent Matt Galley said he is having ongoing conversations with administrators and families and acknowledged “the need for improvement” in how the district addresses these incidents. The minutes record no formal investigative outcome or disciplinary action at the Nov. 21 meeting; board members described next steps as increased awareness, education and review of district practices.
The board moved on to consent and policy items after public comment. A work session was scheduled for Dec. 9; the board held an executive session on personnel later in the evening but the minutes say no action was taken.
