Lake Stevens staff outline Central Kitchen plan after summer meal program update

Food and Nutrition Service Manager Mollie Langum updated the Lake Stevens School District Board on meal service operations and a proposed Central Kitchen during the March 12 meeting.
Langum reported that the summer 2024 program served 3,016 meals; the minutes record daily averages of 141 in June, 105 in July and 98 in August. She noted the program also served 76 adult purchased meals during the period recorded in the minutes. Langum highlighted support from community partners including LS Farmers Market, Grocery Outlet, Stevens Creek Garden and Half Price Books.
She described a proposed Central Kitchen intended to expand capacity, serve as a distribution hub, support collaboration with the Secondary Innovation Center and improve meal quality and service flow at Elementary 8, Glenwood and Skyline. Planned improvements include updated kitchen equipment, better meal-line flow, increased lunchroom capacity and sound-absorbing materials to enhance the student meal experience.
Langum thanked Building Coordination Matt Wyant for sharing space at the ELC facility and noted winter kitchen programming that emphasized a “kindness” theme. The minutes record no public objections to the proposals; the board did not take a formal vote on the Central Kitchen concept during this meeting.
