PTPC nominee Michael Robbins details student-centered approach in House Education confirmation hearing

Michael Robbins, superintendent of the Bristol Bay Borough School District, appeared before the Alaska House Education Committee on March 27 as the governor's nominee for the superintendent seat on the Alaska Professional Teaching Practices Commission (PTPC).

“For the record, my name is Michael Robbins, and I serve as the superintendent of the Bristol Bay Borough School District,” Robbins told the committee, adding he was honored to be renominated. He described the PTPC's role as “protecting Alaska's students and maintaining the integrity of the education profession,” and said the commission focuses on ethical standards and professional development for educators.

Robbins said his decision-making on the commission is guided by a single principle: “what is best for students.” He outlined priorities including strengthening processes and protocols, expanding opportunities for professional development, and ensuring the commission's work is both preventive and supportive of educators.

Committee members asked Robbins about the balance between following curriculum and relying on teacher judgment. Robbins replied that curriculum is a “road map” but that effective teachers make it come alive for students: “the great teacher always makes it work.”

Chair Co-chair Himshoo opened public testimony on Robbins' nomination but said no one in-room or online signed up to speak; the committee closed public testimony and recorded an acknowledgement that it had heard from Robbins under AS 39.05.080. The committee paused briefly to complete paperwork; the record notes that a signature on that report does not indicate a committee vote for or against the confirmation.

Robbins thanked the committee and offered to answer further questions. The committee then moved on to later agenda items.
