Pennsauken school board approves personnel slate, accepts audit and clears $13.8M bill list

The Pennsauken Township Board of Education voted Feb. 18 to approve a bundled slate of personnel appointments, transfers and retirements, accepted a follow-up audit by the State Comptroller and approved the district’s monthly bill list totaling $13,798,189.29.
The board’s personnel agenda covered new hires and appointments including Tracy Wingate as an art teacher at Pennsauken High School, Katlyn Ubil as staff accountant in the administration office and Rosa Ovalles as assistant transportation supervisor. The personnel package also recorded several leaves of absence under FMLA, resignations and long-service retirements such as Anne Marie Dewitt (math teacher, 33 years) and Lisa Swint (English teacher, 26 years). The board approved numerous co-curricular stipends and spring athletic coaching assignments for PHS and HPMS. Mr. Carey moved the personnel motion and Ms. Johnson seconded; the motion to approve agenda items 2–35 carried.
On finance, the board approved the February bill list totaling $13,798,189.29, which includes payroll runs and multiple fund categories. The board also accepted a follow-up audit report from the Office of the State Comptroller dated Dec. 10, 2024, and presented a Corrective Action Plan addressing the audit recommendations. The acceptance of the audit and the CAP was included in Business & Finance items 36–46 and was approved on a motion by Mr. McDevitt, seconded by Mr. Alves.
The board approved several contracts and purchases during the Business & Finance vote. Notable items include: - A recommendation to purchase K–5 Reveal Math curriculum materials from McGraw Hill LLC not to exceed $316,783.00, with planned payments spread across five years (50% due Aug. 1, 2025; remaining payments listed through Aug. 1, 2029). The textbook purchase was listed as contingent on budget availability. - A contract with W. J. Gross, Inc. for Delair Elementary School’s fire-alarm voice upgrade not to exceed $261,920, funded from Account #12-000-400-450-120-000-00. - Continued participation in the Garden State Buying Cooperative for Food and Nutrition purchasing for 2025–2026.
Several procurement and bid schedules for 2025–2026 were acknowledged, including IFB dates for food service, milk and transportation routes. The board also authorized requests for proposals for medical insurance under N.J.A.C. 5:34-2.1 and N.J.S.A. 18A:18A-5(a)(10) as Extraordinary Unspecifiable Services.
Public comment during the meeting was brief. Resident Ellen Dougherty offered congratulations to new board members during the agenda-only comment period. At the meeting’s close, Ms. Johnson praised school events, saying, “The Intermediate School Eagles Rally was amazing,” and the board adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
Next scheduled meetings are March 18 and April 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Pennsauken High School.
