Board approves multilingual classes, therapy dog, health screenings and accepts IDEA funds

The Pennsauken Township Board of Education on Oct. 14 approved several district programs and services intended to support multilingual learners and students with special needs.
The board approved Adult ML classes to be held Saturdays beginning Oct. 25 at Pennsauken High School; the classes will be free and open to parents and district employees and funded through Title III Immigrant accounts. The board also approved the Annual Title I meeting at PHS on Nov. 13 to explain available resources to families.
For special-education supports, the board approved placement of a trained therapy dog named Mikey in the Phifer Autistic Classroom under the supervision of handler Tara Aviles and authorized reimbursement of certification, handler membership and insurance totaling $1,434.81 from Title IV funds. The board also entered a contract with the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired for services to eligible students and approved Virtua Pediatric Mobile Services to conduct dental, vision and hearing screenings and sports physicals for students with parental permission beginning in October 2025.
The district accepted federal IDEA allocations for the 2025–26 school year: a Basic allocation of $1,742.48 and a Preschool allocation of $51,797.00. The board approved nursing service plans and related memoranda of understanding with institutions supporting field placements and credit-for-prior-learning participation for students.
Superintendent Dr. James Bevere presented NJSLA spring 2025 results as part of the assessments presentation during the meeting.
