Edmond approves $100,000 in lodging tax support to host inaugural Route 66 Beach Sprint Rowing Festival

The Edmond City Council voted unanimously to authorize support for the inaugural Route 66 Beach Sprint Rowing Festival at Arcadia Lake in August 2026.

Visit Edmond director Jennifer Thornton asked the council to approve three items: (1) a budget amendment to spend $100,000 in lodging tax dollars to host the event, (2) a resolution seeking a state ‘quality event’ designation that could make the event eligible for up to $250,000 in reimbursement, and (3) a host‑sponsorship agreement with the Beach Sprint Rowing League and US Rowing. Thornton said the plan includes partnerships with the University of Central Oklahoma boathouse, Arcadia Lake Commission, Army Corps of Engineers, and local volunteers including the Chamber and YMCA.

Mike Kanop of Riversport America described beach sprint rowing as a short, fast 250‑meter race that will make its Olympic debut and emphasized the sport’s broadcast and social‑media appeal. Kanop estimated conservative first‑year economic impact of about $230,000 and projected 1,500 spectators, while staff noted potential outreach and training opportunities tied to the UCO boathouse.

Council members asked questions about the state application timeline and possible use of lodging‑tax and master‑plan funds; staff said the application is due at month’s end and the tourism advisory board supports the request. The council approved the budget amendment, the quality‑event resolution and the host agreement by separate motions; each passed 5–0.

The festival is scheduled for August 2026; staff will finalize agreements and coordinate volunteers and event logistics with partners.
