The Raeford City Council on Feb. 3 voted to support a newly formed Downtown Raeford Business Association (DRBA) and to serve as a headline sponsor for three DRBA events planned in 2020.
City Manager Dennis Baxley told the council the DRBA was created through the N.C. Department of Commerce's Hometown Strong program and currently has a 10-member board. The association outlined three events for 2020: a Food Truck Rodeo in McLauchlin Park on May 1; a Warehouse Jam with the Jebb Mac Band on Oct. 2; and a Running of the Mullet 5K Roast and Oyster Shuck on Dec. 4. DRBA requested the City be the headline sponsor for the three events at a total cost of $3,300.
Councilwoman Mary Neil King moved that the City of Raeford be the headline sponsor at a cost of $3,300, with each event paid for separately when it occurs and payment implemented as recommended by the City Manager (suggesting $1,100 from the 2019 budget and $2,200 in the upcoming fiscal year). Councilman John Jordan seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
The sponsorship decision is meant to support local business promotion and event production; the City Manager recommended funding be split between the current and upcoming fiscal years to smooth budgetary impact. During public comment later in the meeting, resident Mary Randall asked the council to enforce leash laws in neighborhoods; Mayor McNeill said her request would be considered.
