Lake Stevens leaders celebrate bond win and highlight student progress, SACo initiatives

Superintendent Dr. Mary Templeton used the Feb. 12 Board meeting to thank the community and district staff for support following the district’s recent bond victory, praising volunteers and administrators for their roles in the campaign.
"I Love Lake Stevens Schools," Dr. Templeton said, and added that she has found the community to be the "heart and soul of our district," naming Executive Director of Planning and Construction Robb Stanton, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance Teresa Main and Executive Director of Communications Jayme Tayfor for their leadership on the bond effort.
Principals presented instructional and student-wellness updates. Highland Principal Ryan Henderson reported iReady Reading progress: 130 students reached grade-level proficiency and 31 students advanced beyond the two-plus-levels-behind category; he said 80% of students reached the halfway mark toward annual typical growth. Henderson described Tier 1 instructional consistency, daily attention to vocabulary and WIN (What I Need) Time as targeted support.
Building Coordinator Vicki Francois reviewed Foundation for Excellence and HomeLink priorities, including pre-assessments for grades 3–9, collaborative educator teams to strengthen writing instruction, co-created rubrics and measurable targets: 75% of grades 3–9 writing at or near grade level, 90% of secondary distance-learning students earning credit, and a 50% reduction in intervention plans compared with 2023–24.
Student Advisory Committee (SACo) members shared recent outreach: hosting booths at school events that engaged more than 250 families, co-hosting a Heritage Night that drew about 400 attendees, and running a voter-registration booth that registered 52 new voters. SACo leaders described plans for a Student Summit Dinner, recruitment for 2025–2027 SACo positions and continued newsletter improvements.
Board members and SACo representatives repeatedly framed the meeting as celebratory following the bond's passage. Director Paul Lund called the district a "shining star in the nation" and said, "We grow amazing students here." City Council Member Kymm Shipman, speaking during public comment, congratulated the district and praised its community engagement.
The meeting concluded with thanks and an acknowledgement that the Board would move into an executive session on real estate; no public action resulted from that closed session.
