Lake Stevens board highlights student honors and instructional programs at Jan. 15 meeting

At its Jan. 15 regular meeting, the Lake Stevens School District Board of Directors heard program overviews and honored students and staff from multiple schools across the district.
Principal Leslie Ivelia of Lake Stevens High School reviewed CTE, DECA, leadership and ASB activities, drama and the girls soccer state championship, saying learning is central to the school's work and stressing a goal of securing a diploma for every student. She identified School Improvement Plan targets including raising the on-time graduation rate and improving Multilingual Learners' progress on the 2025 WIDA assessments.
Math teachers Suzanne Horn, Michaela Dark, Kylen Fountain and Miranda Wallenberg described the Building Thinking Classrooms approach, explaining how learning objectives are graded and how unit-overview tools help both teachers and students navigate course work and track a student’s learning journey.
Hillcrest Elementary Principal Dr. Katy Rudolph outlined the Hillcrest School Improvement Plan goals for reading and math, described school culture and leadership roles, and provided details on the Structured Learning Center, including the number of students across two classrooms and supports to integrate students into general-education settings.
Board members also recognized Students of the Month from Lake Stevens Middle, North Lake Middle, Cavelero Mid-High and Lake Stevens High School, and Director of Equity and Inclusion Monica Meadows introduced APPLE Award recipients Courtney Williams, Eileen Gordon, Heather Johnson, Jennifer Schoenwald and Jill Wright.
The presentations were framed around improving student outcomes and supporting inclusive instructional practices; no formal board action was required on the program reports. The meeting continued with consent items and other routine business and adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
