Lake Stevens highlights midyear reading, math gains and aims for 75% proficiency

Principal Tori Thomas told the Lake Stevens School District Board on Jan. 29 that Skyline Elementary is targeting “75% of students at grade level or higher” on the i‑Ready reading diagnostic after reporting midyear improvements in both reading and math.
MTSS (Multi‑Tiered System of Supports) Specialist Kristen Smootz presented data showing K–5 math scores rose from about 25% to 50% and reading scores improved from about 42% to 53% at midyear. Smootz said the school is focusing on tiered instruction, collaboration and data‑driven interventions to keep students on track toward the 75% target.
Reading specialists Kaitlin Kulseth and Crissi Johnson described how instruction is structured across tiers: Tier 1 provides differentiated, standards‑based instruction for all students; Tier 2 offers supplemental interventions for roughly 15% of students who need more support; and Tier 3 delivers intensive, individualized interventions for approximately 5% of students. The specialists emphasized progress monitoring tools such as phonics and oral reading fluency measures and use of the Phonics & Word Reading Survey and progress monitoring tools.
Board members and Student Advisory Council representatives praised the presentation and classroom visits that preceded the meeting. The district’s next steps include continuing data monitoring, targeted Tier 2 supports where needed and progress checks to measure whether the 75% goal is met by the end of the year.
