Skyline and Sunnycrest present MTSS/PBIS plans; new SACo student members sworn in

Principals from Skyline and Sunnycrest presented building reports at the Lake Stevens School District board meeting on Sept. 11 that focused on Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Skyline Principal Tori Thomas introduced her team and described the school's '180 Days of New Opportunities' initiative, expanded use of MTSS practices, a new Explorer Store where students spend earned tickets, and efforts to strengthen Tier 1 instruction. MTSS specialist Kristen Smutz described collaborative planning using backward design and data-driven decision-making. Title I specialists presented reading and math intervention growth data and described schoolwide intervention cycles.
Sunnycrest Principal Mikey Trexel highlighted a staff survey and Panorama data showing approximately 60% of students report a sense of belonging; she said the addition of clubs (drama, chess) and a partnership with "Mari s Place" have contributed. Dean of Students Jesse Anderson described PBIS tactics — including Run Club, a DJ Dance Party and a Screamin' Eagle reward menu — intended to reduce office referrals and build school community.
Superintendent Mary Templeton administered oaths to new Student Advisory Council (SACo) members and praised student engagement. Director Paul Lund thanked both schools for their presentations.
