Lake Stevens outlines Secondary Distance Learning program, approves Edgenuity contract for 2024–25

ALE Director Vicky Francois and Secondary Distance Learning (SDL) mentor Claire DeGon briefed the Lake Stevens School Board on June 12 about the SDL program, which serves students in grades 6–12 who choose online or hybrid delivery. Francois said SDL accepts roughly 70–75 students each semester and serves students for a range of reasons, often related to medical or mental-health needs, long-term suspension circumstances, or scheduling via Running Start.
SDL staff described progress-monitoring and interventions. Each student has an individualized Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP); progress reports are shared weekly, and the program uses a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). Claire DeGon described intervention practices, including weekly intervention classes, structured to-do lists, and 1:1 video support. Francois reported that 93% of classes taken by SDL students earned credit this year.
The district has entered into a contract with Edgenuity to provide the online platform and training for staff and families in 2024–25. Francois said the platform will expand course options and provide professional development. Superintendent Ken Collins noted that 22 seniors attending distance learning received their diplomas.
Why it matters SDL provides an alternative pathway for students who cannot or choose not to attend full-time in-person school and the Edgenuity contract is a substantive program-change affecting course access and vendor support.
