Milan council adopts 2022-23 budget, sets tax rates and approves key spending

Milan’s City Council adopted the fiscal year 2022-23 budget and set tax rates at its May 23 regular meeting, approving a series of related spending measures and departmental budgets.
The council approved Resolution 2022-05, formally adopting the budget, capital improvement plan and tax rates for FY2022-23. Councilmember Nie moved the resolution, seconded by Councilmember Kerkes; the roll call was six ayes, zero nays, one absent.
City Administrator Jim Lancaster thanked City Treasurer Sarah Finch "for presenting a sound budget and for all the work she has put into it," according to meeting minutes. The council also approved the Milan Area Fire Department (MAFD) FY23 budget Option One and the department’s proposed capital percentages and operating budget.
Other spending approved included a $4,745.50 payment to Authentic Cleaning for deep cleaning of city building floors (motion by Councilmember Nie; roll call six ayes, zero nays, one absent) and the approval of bills payable and payroll totaling $132,045.04 (motion by Councilmember Thompson; carried unanimously).
Mayor Ed Kolar and councilmembers allowed a brief public comment period; non-resident Carrie Ritchie provided information on an upcoming Milan Chamber fundraiser. The council announced its next regular meeting for Monday, June 13, 2022, with an agenda deadline of June 8. The body later moved into a closed session at 8:15 p.m. under Michigan’s Open Meetings Act (MCL 15.268(d)) to consider the purchase or lease of real property and adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
