District performing-arts facilitator outlines alignment to new state standards and events calendar

Ashley Burns, the district’s performing-arts facilitator and general-music teacher at Crawford Elementary, told trustees the department is aligning curriculum to Wyoming’s new fine-performing-arts standards and piloting assessments ahead of full implementation.
Burns highlighted local professional development (a Wyoming Orff chapter workshop hosted in Gillette), the district’s 35-year partnership with the Kennedy Center, use of CAM-Plex Heritage Center performance space, and extracurricular ensembles that give students opportunities to perform in the community. “Sing, sing, dance, play,” she summarized as the department’s teaching motto.
She said elementary teachers are experimenting with assessments and that secondary programs are scheduled to begin alignment work on the district professional-development day. Burns listed upcoming events — the sixth-grade honor choir on March 31 and numerous elementary and secondary concerts — and encouraged trustees and families to consult the district performing-arts calendar on the district website.
Board members praised the variety of offerings and noted the importance of funding sources and community partners that make performances possible.
