Commissioners table security entrance award, hear DCNR update and community announcements

Cameron County commissioners on Jan. 8 opened bids for a courthouse security entrance project but chose to delay any award while the county engineer and safety committee review the proposals.
During the bid opening, the county noted two bids from the same contractor, JC Orr and Son, Inc. The combined general bid including HVAC, plumbing and electrical was listed at $807,959 and the prime contract bid at $699,459. After discussion, Commissioner Herzing moved to table the award until the engineer and safety committee meet; Commissioner Moate seconded and the motion was approved unanimously.
In 'Good of the Order,' Marilyn Erickson asked about a DCNR list of 2025 accomplishments and 2026 objectives; Commissioner Herzing read the document aloud and the correspondence was filed with the minutes. Commissioners also announced an America 250 kickoff event for Cameron County on Jan. 28, 2026, and an informational session about the Innovation Kitchen the same day. A request for the Fourth Street School renovation cost evaluation was raised; Commissioners said the report has not yet been received.
The board adjourned at 11:39 a.m. The next regular commissioners meeting is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2026.
