Superintendent asks Cecil Delegation for support on $2–3 million road safety project near schools

Dr. Lawson, superintendent, asked the Cecil Delegation to lend its support to a safety project at the Bohemia Manor/Chesapeake City school complex, saying the entrance on Route 213 lacks acceleration and deceleration lanes and creates hazardous conditions for students and drivers. Dr. Lawson said MDOT quoted a price of $2–3 million several years ago and requested the delegation’s letters of support; he said MDOT was optimistic and asked for support now while the agency is proceeding.

Delegates and other officials discussed prior contacts with Kenny Fender, the regional State Highway Administration director, and stressed that funding would ultimately determine whether engineering and construction proceed. Dan Steckenberger and other delegates said Mr. Fender has been aware of the issue and that State Highway typically raises money as the main obstacle. Several delegates volunteered to write letters to the secretary, and Chair Kevin said the delegation would circulate a formal letter for signatures.

Why it matters: The project would add acceleration/deceleration lanes at school entrances used by Bohemia Manor and Chesapeake City Elementary, improving safety where traffic speeds on Route 213 can reach 50–55 mph. Dr. Lawson said the project estimate ($2–3 million) is three years old and that current costs will likely be higher.
