Summary
Committee members reported the new snowblower is working, the North Center Street trail is functioning, and they discussed potential new Burgi Lane trail construction and lighting and signage issues, with preliminary resurfacing by BD Bush noted.
Midway City public works staff and committee members used the Feb. 24 Parks, Trails & Trees meeting to review recent maintenance and project items and to discuss potential future work.
Preston Broadhead, public works, reported that trail maintenance after a recent snowstorm is underway and that the new snowblower is working well; he said he is still adjusting clearing timing so he does not have to redo trails after snowplows are run. He also said the sign at the corner of Homestead Drive and Cari Lane appears to have been knocked over, likely by a car, and that he plans to reinstall it.
Committee members noted the new trail on North Center Street is functioning as intended. Councilman JC Simonsen raised a separate concern about lighting, reporting a report that lights in Centennial Park were not working; Mayor Craig Simons said he would check the lights after the meeting. JC said he appreciates the new dark-sky-compliant streetlights but that Main Street feels darker and suggested evaluating additional lighting near crosswalks to improve visibility.
The committee discussed a potential detached trail along Burgi Lane from the west boundary of Valais to Interlaken but flagged engineering challenges at the western end near a slope. Members said a detached trail is preferable but that an attached trail might be considered during a planned resurfacing; the mayor said BD Bush may resurface that stretch as soon as spring. Katie Villani said Nancy O’Toole has been in conversations about funding.
Committee members asked to inspect crosswalk areas at night and to continue coordination on trail alignment and resurfacing timing.
