Committee weighs widening, separated trail options for Homestead and North Center corridors

Committee members spent substantial time Feb. 24 discussing a major trail project on Homestead and connectivity on North Center Street as part of routine planning for next year’s resurfacing work.
A committee member said, "The major project for next year, starting in July, will be Homestead From the entrance to Homestead up and into Cottages On The Green," and outlined how some resurfacing money has been scoped for that corridor. Members discussed whether to widen the existing trail or pursue a separated-grade trail where steep slopes make a detached path challenging.
Chair described a recent meeting with the Belay homeowners association about ownership and responsibility and suggested rerouting part of the trail to the north side of the road to avoid a steep cliff. "It looks like trees have been removed from near the trail, but it's still heaving a lot," the Chair said, noting root intrusion and the high cost of deep root barriers.
Members noted coordination opportunities with an LDS church project that will add sidewalk and provide a better connection to North Canyon Street, and discussed short-term fixes (widening/curbs) versus longer-term engineering solutions. The committee agreed to explore engineering input and check whether contractor schedules (for example, Beatty Bush’s planned presence) create an opportunity to complete some work sooner.
No formal decisions were made; members requested staff research engineering options, confirm right-of-way extent with Valet (the HOA/landowner group discussed), and report back with costs and an implementation timeline.
