Midway parks panel discusses doubling trail-maintenance funds with potential matching grant

Chair told members the committee typically budgets $45,000 a year for trail maintenance, saying, "It's been $45,000 for as long as I can remember," and reported that Nancy O'Toole "thinks she can get us a matching grant of 45, which will double it." Members discussed using the additional funds for resurfacing and targeted repairs.
Preston, who manages day-to-day trail maintenance, described how staff identify priorities and do seasonal checks, including spring "weight tests" on boardwalks and replacing individual boards to keep structures safe. "It's got good bones," he said of one boardwalk, noting that replacement boards and staining are secondary to ensuring public safety.
Committee members listed priority locations that could be resurfaced if extra funds arrive: Homestead through Cary, Pine Canyon, Bergey Park and a section near the roundabout by Kohler's. The group also discussed whether some projects could be completed while contractor Beatty Bush is mobilized in the area in exchange for on-site storage and labor.
Because the panel did not have a quorum, members agreed only to pursue the grant opportunity and keep the budget discussion active; Chair said she would follow up with Nancy O'Toole and report back to the committee when more information is available.
