Jackson — The Jackson City Council on Dec. 30 ratified an emergency contract change order with AJ Construction Inc. to complete downtown street resurfacing related to the National Folk Festival, authorizing payment not to exceed $496,906.39.
Public Works Director Lorenzo Anderson told the council the work was executed as an emergency to meet festival timelines. Anderson said the resurfacing was billed by tons and estimated the work used roughly 5,000 tons of asphalt across several downtown segments, describing the treatment as a one-and-a-half-inch mill-and-overlay designed to restore the surface layer quickly.
Council members praised the rapid completion and asked whether the process used for the festival resurfacing could be replicated for other projects. Anderson said declaring the work an emergency and supervising the engineering allowed the city to expedite procurement and get the work done quickly, but he cautioned that full base repairs and infrastructure work were not feasible under the emergency timeline.
The council approved the change order and asked staff to return with details on scope and metrics where appropriate.
