On March 10, 2026, the Jackson City Council amended the city compensation plan to change the chief of police’s pay range from 50 to 55 and approved an amendment adjusting step 4.5 to a $150,000 annual salary. Councilors voted to suspend the rules to make the ordinance effective immediately with an April 1 start date for the salary change.
Clerks read a clause stating the ordinance should take immediate effect because "public interest demands establishing the police chief’s salary for an 04/01/2026 start date that is essential to maintain the department operations and ensuring the continued safety for Jackson residents, visitors, and businesses." The ordinance was introduced, amended on the floor and passed after suspension of the rules; the roll call recorded the ordinance vote as 6–0 in favor.
City CFO Jillian Caldwell told the council the administration planned to fund the change either from vacancies in the general fund or from auction proceeds. Council members asked for clarity about funding and suggested the finance committee could review details if more discussion is needed.
Separately, an administrative order to change the chief’s pay-range number from 50 to 55 was approved on the consent section; council discussion confirmed options for funding and placed follow-up in committee where needed.
The ordinance will be effective April 1, 2026, per the adopted whereas clause, and the administration will report on funding sources to the finance committee as requested by the council.
