Jackson City’s finance committee introduced an order to renew MetLife life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for active and retired city employees in the self‑funded health plan for Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2026, and opened the item for discussion.
A committee member moved and another seconded that the item be discussed. Officials noted the city’s basic life benefit has been $10,000 for decades, with accidental coverage at $20,000. “It has turned into what was life insurance 2 decades ago to essentially a burial insurance now,” a committee member said, questioning whether the benefit remains sufficient for modern costs.
Speakers also said the city has seen an increase in life claims tied to COVID in 2020–22, which has affected rates and may factor into future benefit reviews. Committee members recommended considering whether bundling life with other coverages could secure better value.
A technical correction clarified the policy is a 10/20 plan (basic $10,000; accidental $20,000). The committee discussed including life insurance in the forthcoming Insurance Advisory Committee review; no final vote on the MetLife renewal was recorded in this meeting before the Chair adjourned the session.
