Landfill expansion cleared for operations; scales and excavator expected within weeks

Lakisha Weathers Soloway told the committee the landfill received a construction certification from the agency referred to in the meeting as "MDQ" on Feb. 3, clearing a regulatory step needed to begin work in the approved disposal area.
"We have received approval from MDQ as of February 3, for the construction certification," Weathers Soloway said. She told the committee scales have been purchased and the vendor will begin construction once payment is received; staff expect 25–30 days for scale installation, weather permitting. She also said an excavator with required attachments is expected in roughly 30–60 days and that the city will re-advertise for a crawler dozer bid.
Staff said they plan to use an existing dozer in the interim and aim for full opening operations of the expansion toward March, contingent on receipt of parts, vendor schedules and weather.
