Jackson adds $385,000 street sweeper; staff outlines training and routing plans

James Caldwell told the Public Works Committee the city’s new commercial street sweeper has arrived at the facility and staff are scheduling manufacturer training, likely within about two weeks.
"The street sweeper is ordered. It's here. It's on our facility," Caldwell said, adding that the city expects supplier training before the machine is deployed. Caldwell cited a purchase price of $385,000 and said the machine is more capable than the older parking-lot-style sweepers the city still holds but has not fully repaired.
Staff discussed operational options: rotate existing employees into sweeper routes, create a dedicated position if demand warrants it, and use GIS and GPS tracking to develop efficient routes. Caldwell also described an attachment for curb-and-gutter and mowing duties that will extend the machine’s usefulness.
Anderson and Caldwell said the sweeper is not currently configured for heavy snow removal but they are researching retrofit attachments should the city decide to prepare for that use.
