Jackson to auction surplus city vehicles online as one source of cash for equipment

Jackson City staff told the Public Works Committee they will run a first-phase online auction of surplus vehicles through GovDeals to generate revenue for the equipment program and other needs.
"There's 45 vehicles. This is like the first phase," Lorenzo Anderson said, explaining that GovDeals will assess vehicles, set minimum bids and handle online auction logistics. Anderson said the city’s finance office and CAO are negotiating contract details.
When asked about potential proceeds, Anderson gave a broad, nonbinding estimate based on past auctions: "We were looking at probably around $50,000 here," and added that individual vehicles could fetch amounts ranging from a few hundred to multiple thousands depending on condition.
Council members asked whether GovDeals takes a percentage of proceeds; Anderson said he had not seen the contract but believed the commission rate is an agreed percentage and that the CAO negotiated terms in the city’s favor. Staff said vehicles at other city locations would be included in subsequent rounds.
