The Jackson City zoning committee approved petition 4319 to rezone several parcels near Tunica Street and John R. Lynch Street from R-4/C-3 to NMU-1 (Neighborhood Mixed Use) to permit a church parking lot and other community-oriented services for Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church.
Esther Ainsworth, zoning administrator, summarized the request and said the planning board recommended the rezoning. John Burge of Beyond Construction Group, representing the applicant, described plans for a driveway from Aberdeen Street and a larger parking lot accessed from John R. Lynch to improve ingress and egress for church services.
Ainsworth said the NMU-1 classification allows a range of community uses and could accommodate future uses such as a nursery or food pantry, while noting that specific development and parking mitigation would be addressed through site-plan review. Councilwoman Tina Clay, whose church neighbors the property, expressed wholehearted support for Mount Nebo’s growth.
The council moved the ordinance and voted in favor; the meeting recorded the outcome as unanimous. The zoning change allows the church to proceed to site-plan review for detailed access and parking designs, and any new construction or uses will be subject to applicable permitting and neighborhood compatibility checks.
