Board approves two street-privilege sign permits for downtown properties

The Board of Public Works on Dec. 1 approved two street-privilege permits for replacement or updated signs that extend over city sidewalks.
Staff explained that the Shakator MAA LLC request for replacement faces on an existing double-sided pylon sign at 603 Cash Street requires board approval because the sign hangs over the sidewalk; engineering confirmed the permit covers right-of-way access and recommended approval. Director Gallagher recommended the permit and the board approved unanimously on a motion by Director Gallagher, second by Council President Dickinson.
Separately, staff reviewed a request from Weasel Properties for removal and replacement of an existing sign at 501 Front Street South. The new owner will update the sign; staff said the rendering appears similar in size to the existing sign and emphasized clearance over the sidewalk as the critical standard. Council President Dickinson asked whether dimensions matched the previous sign, and staff said clearance—not exact scale—was the key factor. The board approved that permit unanimously on a motion by Councilor McGaughgan, second by Director Train.
Both approvals are for permits that cover signs in the right of way; applicants will proceed with the usual permitting steps.
