At a June 23 work session the Unified Government of Cusseta-Chattahoochee County heard a brief introduction from Chris Dunn of the Georgia Forestry Commission and received administrative updates on grants, roads, solid-waste policy and recreation.
Chris Dunn, the county's forestry contact, introduced himself and said he will return with an annual report and that he has a positive working relationship with local first responders. County Manager Thomas Weaver said the county is reapplying for two grants — a sewer grant and a rails-to-trails walking-trail grant — and that bids for Friendship Road should open in late July with an award possible by the August meeting.
On solid-waste, staff discussed current practice at the recycling site and C&D (construction and demolition) handling. Weaver summarized the current policy: residents with an active water account may bring household garbage at no charge and small amounts of C&D, furniture, appliances, used motor oil, clothing and scrap metal; local businesses are charged; large-scale demolition or remodeling debris will incur a resident charge. Weaver also said staff will reach out to nonprofits about accepting clothing donations.
Recreation updates included an operational splashpad and plans for partnering with Buena Vista on a science camp; fall registration for youth football has opened. Weaver reported that a new animal control officer has been hired and is being trained. Water-department work included cleaning Tank 1 on June 17 and six recent service-line repairs; Public Works noted several locates performed and ongoing audit work with the county auditor.
No executive session was held during the work session; the session adjourned at 10:08 a.m.
Next steps: staff will issue the Friendship Road bid package and return bid results at the August meeting; county manager to pursue clothing-donation partnerships; water and public-works items to be scheduled and reported as they progress.
