Cusseta-Chattahoochee commission adopts FY2026 budget, OKs Georgia Forestry fire-tower agreement and routine measures

The Unified Government of Cusseta-Chattahoochee County commission unanimously adopted its fiscal year 2025–26 budget and approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Georgia Forestry Commission at its June 3 regular meeting.
The commission voted to adopt the operating and capital budget for July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026, with commissioners recording the approval "pending the income line changes and increasing the mileage rate 1–2 mils." The vote was unanimous. Chairman Charles Coffey presided; the motion to adopt the budget was made by Commissioner Jason Frost and seconded by Commissioner Gerald Douglas.
The board also approved a Georgia Forestry Commission contract that provides a fire-tower operator assigned to the Cusseta-Chattahoochee County Forestry Unit. The agreement sets the county's maximum payment for the contract period at $4,738.58 and becomes effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The contract specifies that the assigned fire-tower operator will be a temporary day-laborer not to exceed 40 hours a week and allows either party to terminate with 30 days' written notice. The commission adopted a companion resolution authorizing the chairman to execute the agreement; the motion carried unanimously.
County Attorney Bin Minter briefed the commission on state legislation affecting county operations, saying the recent legislative changes require a county resolution and noting that "The money from FLOST is only for property tax relief." He told the commission that a special election on a local sales tax could be scheduled for Nov. 4.
Other formal actions at the meeting included the reappointment of Carol Greer to Post 3 of the Board of Tax Assessors for a four-year term (June 1, 2025–June 1, 2029) and approval of a conditional use permit for 15.13 acres at 410 Firetower Road to allow a manufactured home. The board additionally authorized putting Friendship Road out to bid for resurfacing that will include one coat and striping.
The meeting moved into executive session at 6:45 p.m. for matters allowable under the open-meetings law; it reconvened at 7:04 p.m. Chairman Coffey stated that the subjects discussed were within legal exceptions and that no votes were taken in closed session.
