County manager reports stray‑facility inspection, staffing challenges and roundabout work

At the Feb. 24 work session County Manager Thomas Weaver updated commissioners on operational matters including an inspection at the county’s stray‑animal facility, staffing concerns related to intergovernmental service agreements, roadwork preparations and recreation programming.

Weaver said the stray‑facility inspection produced a report that raised concerns and that the county has 30 days to correct the issues: "It is still early on, but we have 30 days to clear this up," he told the commission. He described staffing and small compliance items as "we are having some issues with staffing" and said the county continues to work through problems with contract vendors.

Weaver also reported that a roundabout project is underway and urged drivers to avoid the intersection; he said the construction contract specified 60 days but added he believes the work may realistically take about a year: "The contract said 60 days, but he believes a year is more realistic." Public Works has replaced a radio shed and is waiting on Columbus Communications to connect equipment, and LMIG paperwork has been sent to an engineer to prepare bid packets.

Recreation items included extended baseball registration and upcoming youth basketball finals in March. Weaver said auditor David McCoy is still preparing audit materials for the county.

Commissioners did not take policy action on these operational updates during the work session; staff were directed to follow up on the stray‑facility corrective items and LMIG bid packet preparation.
