Salisbury Township SD outlines athletic‑field maintenance plan, schedules deep‑tine aeration and turf upkeep

Facilities staff told the Operations & Finance Committee on June 12 that the district will pursue targeted maintenance to restore and protect athletic fields this summer and into the fall.
Bill, the facilities speaker, said turf and rubber infill surfaces are groomed several times a year with a drag machine and that grass fields will be aerovated, overseeded and treated with a top dress mixture to reduce compaction. “I’ve asked for 80% sand and 20% soil,” Bill said when describing the sand/soil mixture he intends to add to grass fields to improve drainage and keep soils looser over time.
For the varsity baseball and lower practice football fields, the district plans to contract deep‑tine aeration that will drive tines 14–16 inches into the ground to break up compacted soils. Staff said the work improves drainage and root penetration and that adding sand helps with long‑term field drainage.
On the synthetic turf stadium field, staff said increased lacrosse play is accelerating compaction and that more frequent “fluffing” is needed; staff recommended a maintenance cadence of about every month and a half to two months to maintain acceptable GMAX results.
Facilities staff also described a localized problem in the bullpen area caused by a press‑box rain gutter that drops water on the pitcher mounts; they plan to redirect the gutter and repair the bullpen surface once a specialty lift is available and estimated that work could be completed no later than July.
The committee asked for progress updates; staff said they will keep coaches informed about rotating practice areas to reduce wear and will report back on contractor scheduling and completion dates.
