The hearing opened with County Manager Chuck Scragg telling the board that the Planning and Zoning Board had voted 4-0 to deny the applicant's request to rezone Map/Parcel 027 016 from Agricultural Forestry to Rural Residential and inviting public comment. Engineer Brandon Purcell described the survey and the information his firm had provided to the applicant about potential impacts on roads, schools and the broader community.
Several nearby residents spoke in opposition. James Roberts, Gloria Sweet and Amanda Stinger said the proposed change would harm the community; Jerry Young urged the board to hold off on a decision until commissioners could review the Planning and Zoning Board's meeting minutes to understand the board's reasons for denying the request.
Commissioner John Reddish moved to table the rezoning request until the commissioners had an opportunity to review the Planning and Zoning Board's decision and minutes. Commissioner Gerald Blocker seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The board then voted unanimously to close the public hearing.
The motion to table leaves the rezoning appeal pending while commissioners obtain and review the Planning and Zoning Board's record. The minutes do not indicate a new hearing date or additional conditions for reconsideration; the board took no action to overturn the Planning and Zoning decision at this meeting.
