Long County board approves CDBG contract, TAN and organizational items; adopts BOE millage

At the Jan. 12 board meeting commissioners nominated Commissioner Jeremy Hall to serve as chairman for 2026; the motion passed unanimously. The board set the 2026 election qualifying fee for County Commission candidates in Districts 2 and 3 at $290 (3% of the prior-year base gross salary) after staff calculated the fee using the ACCG guideline formula and rounding. The board approved payment of bills and other routine minutes and organizational items unanimously.
The board awarded the 2023 CDBG project contract to East Coast Asphalt for work on Church Corner Road, Espanola Lane, Washington Drive, Market Drive and Woods Lake. The winning bid reduced the county’s match from $278,346 to $257,731; the board approved paying match costs as invoices are received.
To address cash-flow timing, the board approved a resolution confirming a Tax Anticipation Note (TAN) in the amount of $350,000 previously executed with Ludowici Bank. The county reported that tax anticipation loans must be repaid by the end of January and that TANs and short-term borrowing have been used to cover operating timing gaps. The motion to approve the TAN was seconded and carried unanimously.
On Jan. 29 the board unanimously adopted the Long County Board of Education’s 2025 millage rate at 14.37 mills after the county attorney advised that some prior hearings and notices must be re-advertised because of procedural shortcomings. The board also accepted the attorney’s recommendation to re-advertise and re-conduct hearings where required.
