Long County adds DFCS to grounds contract, continues senior center partnership; several bids tabled

The Long County Board of Commissioners amended the county's grounds maintenance contract with R & R Greencode, LLC to include maintenance at the Long County Division of Family and Children Services offices. County Manager Chuck Scragg said the county already contracts grounds maintenance for the senior center, Walker Park and the library and learned after the agenda was posted of an agreement covering DFCS that should be added to the existing scope. The motion to amend the contract passed unanimously.
The board also voted to continue operating the Long County Senior Center in partnership with Action Pact at a cost of $3,000 per month for fiscal year 2025–2026; Commissioner Gerald Blocker made the motion and the board approved it unanimously.
The board reviewed bids on several projects but tabled final selection pending information from the insurance adjuster about what the county's insurer will cover. Bids noted in the minutes include: Recreation Department damages — Better Baseball ($31,084.52) and Brazen Roofing ($13,689.80); Courthouse roofing — HD Roofing ($79,000) and Pike County Construction ($195,000 flat or $475,000 pitched metal). Selection of the Huckaberry Community Well bid was also initially tabled until after executive session; the board later accepted a bid for the well sale following executive session.
Chairman James Craft moved to postpone disposition of a surplus motor grader until the Work Session; that motion was approved.
Why it matters: the contract amendment and senior center funding affect daily operations and service delivery for county facilities and vulnerable residents who use the senior center. Tabled bids indicate the board sought clarity from the insurer before committing county funds.
