Long County work session: depot committee formed, tax‑digest delay, EMA readiness and equipment discussed

At a called work session on Aug. 19, county staff updated the Long County Board of Commissioners on several administrative and operational matters and the board approved an interagency letter of intent concerning a Forestry Building.
County Manager Chuck Scragg said he contacted the Long County Development Authority (EDA) to assemble a committee to consider the disposition of the county depot. Applications are due Aug. 29; the EDA will meet Sept. 9 to select members, and the committee will prepare a recommendation for the Board of Commissioners.
Mr. Scragg also told commissioners that the county’s tax digest is not yet ready, which is delaying compliance with statutory timelines. He said property values have increased for new homes, commercial businesses and reassessed properties but that the millage rate will remain unchanged; he reminded the board that when an owner’s property value increases with no applicable exemption, that owner’s taxes will increase and the county must hold three public hearings within a 14‑day period, including one at 6:00 p.m.
On county finances, Scragg reported that the county anticipates receiving a $1 million insurance check in October and is awaiting pending reimbursements from GEMA and FEMA; he noted that SRO funds from the Board of Education have already been received, and that with these and other expected revenues the county may be able to meet its financial obligations.
Public Works Director and Fire Chief Chris Moss discussed road and drainage repairs and asked residents for patience; he invited citizens to call him directly and said he would personally visit sites to address concerns. Moss also discussed a potential purchase of a search-and-rescue boat for the EMA Department; Scragg said the equipment could be purchased using Special Funds and that there is a demonstrated need.
EMA Director Chris Stock presented on the Code Red emergency notification system and reminded the board and public about hurricane preparedness steps.
During the meeting the board entered and exited an executive session (motions recorded 4-0) and later approved a motion to send a letter of intent allowing the Forestry Commission to sublet the Forestry Building to the county. The meeting adjourned by unanimous vote; the minutes were adopted Sept. 2, 2025.
