Juab County commissioners told Mona council the county secured a $2,000,000 federal grant for Mona’s Main Street project with a county match of $449,000; work is expected to begin Aug. 1 to coincide with local events and bridge work on nearby highways.
Juab County commissioners informed the Mona City Council that the county secured a $2,000,000 federal grant to fund Mona’s Main Street rehabilitation project and that the county will contribute a $449,000 match for the town’s portion.
"We we got a grant for that for $2,000,000 a federal grant and the county had to match a portion of that and we matched 449,000," Commissioner Marty Palmer said while describing the project scope. He said the Main Street work covers about 1.3 miles and is scheduled to begin Aug. 1 to avoid conflicts with nearby bridge work and to align with Mona's celebration later in August.
Palmer also asked the council to appoint a Mona representative to the county fire district board; the commission noted the board meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 p.m. The commissioners said they are available to assist with the Main Street project and requested the city coordinate on design and schedule to ensure contractor and permit work progress as planned.
During public comment, Palmer described county-level fiscal pressures tied to central-assessed property valuations and urged continued support for county priorities, including public safety funding. A candidate for Job County sheriff, Drake Underwood, also addressed the council and emphasized deputy retention and facility needs if elected.
Next steps for the Main Street project include continued coordination with county staff on permits and contractor paperwork and a community notice about project timing ahead of the August start date.
